1) Tenure structure. Forests were categorized according to land tenures: 73.3433 million ha State-owned and 99.4437 million ha collective-owned forests accounting for 42.45% and 5.75% of the total forest area respectively. They were also categorized according to tenures of the trees: 72.8498 million ha State-owned, 64.8358 million ha collective-owned and 35.1014 million ha household-owned forests respectively accounting for 42.16%, 37.52% and 20.32% of the total forest area.
2) Type of Uses: Forest stands were categorized into protection forest, timber forest, firewood forest and special-purpose forest. The protection forest was 54.7463 million ha in area and 5,500.8448 million m2 in volume, and the special-purpose forest was 6.3802 million ha in area and 1,028.1026 million m2 in volume, the two forest types add up to 42.81% and 53.97% of the total area and volume respectively. Timber forest was 78.6258 million ha in area and 5,512.4194 million m3 in volume; firewood was 3.0344 million ha in area and 56.27 million m3 in volume.
3) Age structure: Young forest was 47.2379 million ha in area and 1,284.966 million m3 in volume. Mid-aged forest was 49.6437 million ha in area and 3,425.7218 million m3 in volume. Close-to-mature forest was 19.98 million ha in area and 2,245.5099 million m3 in volume. Mature forest was 17.1479 million ha in area and 3,016.6098 million m3 in volume. Over mature forest was 8.7699 million ha in area and 2,124.8293 million m3 in volume. A large proportion is the young and mid-aged forests, accounting for 67.85% and 38.94% of the total area and volume respectively.
4) Species composition. According to the dominant species (groups), 5 species (groups) of Oaks, Masson pine, Chinese fir, Beeches, Larches had larger proportions in area and volume. The total area of the 5 species (groups) was 71.3078 million ha, accounting for 49.94% of the total; the total volume was 4,494.1498 million m3, accounting for 37.15% of the total.
