In recent years, the total output value of forestry industries is growing year by year. The gross product value of forestry industries in the whole country reached RMB 689.221 billion (calculated at the current price) in 2004, RMB 103.188 billion more than that in 2003, an increase of 17.61% (figure 4-1). By looking at different industries, the product value of the primary industries was RMB 338.754 billion, contributing 56.4% to the gross output value of all forestry industries, an increases by 10.50% as compared with the same period of last year; the product value of the secondary industries was RMB 256.112 billion, accounting for 37.16% of the product value of all forestry industries, a comparative growth of 27.58%; the third industries had a gross output value of RMB 44.355 billion, covering 6.44%of the gross output value of all forestry industries, a rise by 32.48% over the same period of last year. Among the secondary industries, the manufacturing industries amounted to the most part with a contribution of 97.63%to the product value of the secondary industries; among the manufacturing industries, wood processing and products of timber, bamboo, palm and straw are the largest contributors, accounting for 59.51%of the total product value of the manufacturing industries and 58.10% of that of the secondary industries.

Once bamboos are planted, they can be managed continually for decades or a hundred years.  

With the application of advanced technologies, the yield per unit area of bamboo forests rose substantially and the economic benefit was doubled. Currently the total annual production in China is 12-13 million tons of commercial bamboo timber and 1.6-1.8 tons of bamboo shoots.

The import and export trade of forest products is growing rapidly, and the import growth is higher than the export growth making trade deficit further expended. The aggregate trade value of imports and exports of forest products reached USD 27.738 billion, of which the export value of forest products was USD 12.236 billion and the export value was USD 15.502 billion, and the trade deficit of the imports and exports of forest products was USD 3.266 billion.

"Advice from the Central Government on intensification of balancing urban and rural development to further consolidate the basis for agricultural and rural development (Ref. [2010] no.1)" clearly pointed out on the issue of "making efforts to promote business development and employment for farmers" to "actively develop recreational agriculture, rural tourism, forest tourism and rural service industry, therefore to create non agriculture employment opportunities". The aggregate trade value of export and import of wood forest products in 2003 was USD 19.997 billion, including export of USD 8.097 billion and import of USD 11.9 billion. The trade deficit of wood forest products was USD 3.803 billion. The exported wood forest products were mainly furniture and wooden products, while imports were mainly paper and pulp related products, logs and swan timbers (including special shaped boards).
