Forestry science and technology journals are an important component of forestry science and technology, and also the main media and important force for implementing the strategy of developing forestry through science and technology. Currently, there are 29 forestry science and technology journals administered by the State Forestry Administration, including 12 academic journals, 8 technical journals, 6 general journals and 3 science dissemination journals. For many years, By adhering to correct direction of operation and in order to achieve the development goals, these journals have made significant progress in disseminating knowledge of science and technology, accelerating personnel development, promoting forestry research, industrial development, transfer of research results and strengthening international cooperation and exchange.

The special program for national science and technology infrastructure platform development (shortcut as “platform development”) is formed on the basis of the integration of the previous “Special program for basic works on science and technology for the national level research institutions” and other science and technology programs, aimed at making full use of modern technologies such as information and internet technologies to strategically reorganize and systematically optimize the infrastructure resources of science and technology in order to promote the efficient deployment and integrated utilization of science and technology resources of the whole society and to improve the capacity of scientific and technological innovations. The special program of “platform development” includes projects in 7 fields, i.e. construction of large scientific instruments and facilities and experiment bases, sharing of science and technology data, sharing of natural science and technology resources, development and sharing of literature resources of science and technology, development of internet based science and technology environment, establishment of technical support to monitoring, early warning and emergency system in important fields, studies in basic science and technology standards. The program is implemented in a top-down model. The technical departments of the Ministry of Science and Technology are responsible for project approval, organization of implementation and project management in respective technical fields.

Starting from the 9th 5-year plan, supported by the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture, the State Forestry Administration and the Ministry of Water Resources jointly organize and executed the program of introducing advanced agricultural technologies from other countries, shortcut as “948” program. In the program of introducing advanced agricultural technologies from other countries, the State Forestry Administration mainly undertakes the introduction of forestry technologies. The implementation of “948” program has produced significant impact on China’s forestry science and technology, breaking the relatively closed environment for researches in the past, and upgrading the research quality, shortening the technical gaps between China and the developed countries. The program has put China’s forestry science and technology into a new stage of development, making great contribution to advancement of forestry technologies, training researchers and improving the contribution of forestry sciences and technologies.

This program is an important one in which the State Forestry Administration mainly participates and undertakes tasks, and that is most capable of producing research achievements and training researchers. The program plays an important role in stabilizing forestry research team, training forestry researchers, upgrading forestry science and technology and providing research support to the 6 major forestry programs.

The key science and technology program of the State Forestry Administration (shortened as “SFA key research program”) mainly arranges small projects not covered by the major research programs, these projects play an important supplementary role and include 3 categories of projects new technology development, local key scientific and technological studies, and pioneer studies of soft sciences. The projects of new technology development are aimed to address the problem of severe shortage of advanced technologies currently existing in China’s forestry sector. The local key scientific and technological studies are mainly funded by local government and enterprises, focused on addressing locally critical technologies in the implementation of the 6 major forestry programs and studying new technologies for utilizing forest resources with local features. The pioneer soft science studies are self-funded by the institutions applying for the projects, and focused on policy and theoretical issues that the 6 major forestry programs and the forestry development and reform are facing with.
