BEIJING, August 22 -- China owns the largest area of grassland in the world, which stands 12% of the total global grassland area, followed by Australia, the United States and Brazil.

In China, the area of grassland is also the largest among other types of lands, which stands 40.9% of total national land area, nearly 3 times larger than agricultural land area, and 2 times larger than forestland area. And 80% of the grassland are distributed in north part of China, which are mainly natural grassland.

The term of “grasslands” in Grassland Law of the People's Republic of China mainly refers to natural and artificial pasture, and the grasslands mentioned above are in line with Wikipedia, which are areas where the vegetation is dominated by grasses.
