As the only state-level nature reserve in China that protects the northern tropical limestone seasonal rainforest, Nonggang Nature Reserve is one of the nature reserves in the world with the distribution of both Trachypithecus francoisi and Trachypithecus poliocephalus ssp. leucocephalus, the nature reserve with the largest number of primates, and also a biological gene pool of limestone seasonal rainforest ecosystems, including Excentrodendron hsienmu forest, Cephalomappasinensis forest, Deutzianthus tonkinensis forest in China's northern tropical areas. After more than 30 years of construction, the Nature Reserve has made remarkable achievements in protection regulation, scientific monitoring, community management and public education.
The Nature Reserve has not only established the three-level field patrol system of management bureau, protection station, and management and protection site, but also delimited the management and protection scope of the grass-roots protection stations, and formulated the employment and assessment methods of the rangers.
At present, Nonggang Nature Reserve is the teaching and research base for Guangxi Institute of Botany, Guangxi Normal University and Guangxi University, with researches covering many disciplines such as ecology, zoology and plant taxonomy, and has collected a large number of scientific monitoring data and achieved fruitful scientific results.
In order to build a harmonious community relationship, Nonggang Nature Reserve has established 2 forest conservation committees (FCCs), 6 community cooperation committees (CCCs), for coordinating with the surrounding community stakeholders to carry out community cooperation and education on environmental protection. The establishment and operation of the cooperative institutions have laid a solid foundation for the community cooperation in the reserve.
As the Nature Reserve is located in the Zhuang-inhibited regions in Southwest Guangxi, where singing folk songs is a popular custom, we employed the “folk song fair”, a peculiar culture and customs of Zhuang ethnic group, to carry out environmental awareness education in the surrounding communities, which has achieved a good publicity effect. At the same time, through such activities as entering the campus to lead the primary and secondary school students into the nature reserve and other forms of activities, combining with proposals, a letter to parents, and others, the environmental conservation concept of “Small Hands Holding Big Hands” is conveyed to the general public, that is, the small hands of children join the big hands of their parents to build up a harmonious and beautiful community environment.
