The import and export trade of forest products is growing rapidly, and the import growth is higher than the export growth making trade deficit further expended. The aggregate trade value of imports and exports of forest products reached USD 27.738 billion, of which the export value of forest products was USD 12.236 billion and the export value was USD 15.502 billion, and the trade deficit of the imports and exports of forest products was USD 3.266 billion.

"Advice from the Central Government on intensification of balancing urban and rural development to further consolidate the basis for agricultural and rural development (Ref. [2010] no.1)" clearly pointed out on the issue of "making efforts to promote business development and employment for farmers" to "actively develop recreational agriculture, rural tourism, forest tourism and rural service industry, therefore to create non agriculture employment opportunities". The aggregate trade value of export and import of wood forest products in 2003 was USD 19.997 billion, including export of USD 8.097 billion and import of USD 11.9 billion. The trade deficit of wood forest products was USD 3.803 billion. The exported wood forest products were mainly furniture and wooden products, while imports were mainly paper and pulp related products, logs and swan timbers (including special shaped boards).  

In 2003, the export of non-wood forest products had a value of USD 4.139 billion while the import was valued at USD 3.603 billion, and the main parts of the import growth were the chemical forest products and fruits. The trade surplus of non-wood forest products was USD 536 million. The exports of non-wood forest products were mainly fruits, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and wild herbaceous vegetables, while the imports were predominantly chemical forest products.  

Since the reform and open-up, the bamboo production in China has developed rapidly, a new industry from resource development to processing and utilization of bamboo was emerged in many counties and municipalities, and remarkable ecological, economic and social benefits have been achieved. To further mobilize enthusiasm of the masses in developing bamboo industry, to enhance the social impact of bamboo development and accelerate the exploitation and construction of bamboo resources in China, the Ministry of Forestry made a decision on 27 Feb 1996 to name the ten counties (municipalities) as “the Home of bamboo in China”, and they were Jianou municipality and Shunchang county of Fujian province, Anji and Linan counties of Zhejiang province, Yifeng and Chongyi counties of Jiangxi province, Guangning county of Guangdong province, Tiaojiang county of Hunan province, Guangde county of Anhui province, Chishui city of Guizhou province.
