Desertification and land degradation are the major threats to the world ecology and food security and have attracted the long-term attention of both heads of the states and the international communities. SDG15 of the 2030 Sustainable development Agenda set the goal to “protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and biodiversity loss” and “by 2030, strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world”. Therefore, accelerating science and technology, optimizing talents education are of great significance to promote ecological restoration, economic development, and green job opportunities in arid and semi-arid areas.

To further adapt the needs of global sustainable development, to support achieving the goal of land degradation neutrality, explore the pathway to optimize the development of talents, and promote international exchange and cooperation on combating desertification, the International Symposium on Developing Talents and Advancing Science Technology for Desertification Combating will be held in Hohhot of Inner Mongolia, China on June 17, 2019.

The Symposium will invite policy makers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and young scholars from international organizations, governments, research institutes, educational institutions, and civil societies from more than 50 countries which being seriously affected by desertification along the “Belt and Road” area to participate and exchange their thoughts. The anticipated participating international organizations include United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), UN Environment, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Conservation Union (IUCN), United Nations University (UNU), International Union of Forests Research Organizations (IUFRO).

The symposium is structured as a one-day with plenary plus 5 parallel thematic sessions followed by a one-day field trip with expected 200 participants in total.

The theme of this symposium is “Enabling talents development and innovation, advancing science and technology progress to meet the needs of sustainable development to alleviate land desertification”. Five subtopics will be discussed respectively in five parallel sessions.

The objectives of this Symposium are to jointly dissect the challenges of desertification and land degradation in the scenario of global climate change, to exchange and share the basic research breakthrough on global conservation and restoration as well as the sustainable land management technology and practices, to explore how the university discipline construction and development to adapt to the needs of sustainable development, to strengthen the development and exchange of tip-top professional talents for seeking solutions to desertification and land degradation as well as ecological sustainability.

To enrich the content of the symposium and encourage more scientists, scholars and young scholars to be involved, the symposium calls for research papers and presentation abstracts. The selected papers will be distributed and shared with the participants. For those seeking opportunity to make presentation in the symposium, an additional PPT presentation is requested.

Research paper topics are in the following:

1. The challenges of desertification and land degradation in the context of global climate change.

2. Theory and technological innovations in dryland and/or desert ecosystem conservation, preservation and restoration in context of climate change.

3. Integrated land use planning and sustainable land management based on land degradation and desertification Monitoring and Assessment for achieving land degradation Neutrality.

4. Opportunities and challenges of green economics and nature-based economy in arid and semi-arid areas for poverty alleviation, regional development and building Green "Belt and Road".

5. Demand for sustainable development, internet and information technology means, knowledge management, technology innovation, and talent cultivation in the New Era.
