The desert is divided into several parts by roads and each part is managed individually, as the tactic in Master Sun's Art of War says, “Divide and Rule”. Grasses and trees are planted on each side of the roads. The crisscrossing roads have formed a net on Kubuqi Desert. In 1999, Elion Resources Group, a chemical factory at that time, led the construction of the first sand-crossing road, opening the prelude to large-scale desertification prevention and control. At present, the road net greatly facilitates the travelling on the desert.
The farmers and herdsmen in the desert live in the modern “new herdsman’s village”, and engage themselves in tourism, open up pastoral hotels, or become ecological workers. In the herdsmen's home, the front is dining area, the rear living area, the right side the cattle and sheep captive area. Those diversified employment opportunities have transformed those farmers and herdsman from ecological refugees to ecological rich people. Now in the Seven Star Lake shores in Kubuqi Desert, the grasses are exuberantly growing and the waters crystal clear.
Elion Resources Group has built a solar power station in the desert, where Glycyrrhiza uralensis is planted under the solar panel. The model of “desertification control + power generation + farming + livestock breeding + poverty alleviation” is unfolded here. The farmers and herdsmen living in Kubuqi Desert with an area of the 13,900 square kilometers, are the most direct participants and the biggest beneficiary of the over 20 years of desertification control and poverty alleviation.
