One of the best practices of shifting sands fixation: under the unified organization of the local government departments, farmers and herdsmen who carry out desertification control would receive subsidies.

Mechanical sand barrier is a technological measure of fixing sand dunes, setting squares sand barriers in mobile sand dunes with crop straw. The technology is applicable for tall mobile dunes, or shifting sands on railway and both sides of the road.
Located at the middle of Horqin Sandy Land, Naiman County of Inner Mongolia is widely distributed with tall shifting sands and has serious land sandification. For decades, local people and forestry sectors continue to learn from foreign experience in practice for prevention and control of desertification, sum up local practices, and gradually form and use the method of mechanical sand barriers suitable for local conditions. Under the unified organization of the local government, the rural households carried out the prevention and control of desertification with good results. Since 2000, under the promotion of key projects such as the Phase IV of the Three-North Shelterbelt Development Programme, this technology has been widely promoted with remarkable results, completing the control of sandy area of 13,000 hectares and forming desertification control model of both sides of desert-crossing highways like Zhanggutai and Weiliansu.
