TAIYUAN, May 4, Xinhua - North China's Shanxi Province has tamed about 1 million hectares of desert in the past 12 years to help reduce and fend off sandstorms hitting Beijing and its neighboring regions, according to local authorities.

Work since 2000 has formed a forest shelter belt in Shanxi, running 230 km east to west, reducing risks of desert encroachment and also blocking sandstorms from further north. [Source: China.org.cn]

SHIJIAZHUANG, May 6, Xinhua - A forest fire that has raged for two days in north China's Hebei province was extinguished Sunday afternoon through the efforts of 6,100 firefighters and local residents, local authorities said.

As of 4 p.m., the fire, which began in the village of Yinzhuangzi in the city of Zhangjiakou, had been completely extinguished and no casualties had been reported, a local official said.

April 25, China.org.cn - "Forest in the sky," a new Italian ecological innovation, is expected to be exhibited at the Qingdao International Horticultural Exposition in 2014.

The expo garden is now under construction, with various kinds of local and alien arbors, bushes and flowers. Some green plants will be planted on the rooftops to realize vertical greening, following the Italian idea, according to a staff of the Qingdao Expo.
