QINGDAO, Dec.2, Xinhua - Jiaozhou Bay is the estuary of Moshui River in the Chengyang District of Qingdao. It is the largest estuary wetland in area in Qingdao, which is a significant bird district in China and important station for migratory birds in the Asian-Pacific region as well.

The Dajiu Lake National Wetland Park is located at the junction of Sichuan, Chongqing and Hubei. It borders Wushan and Wuxi counties of Chongqing in the west, Zhushan and Fangxian of Shiyan city in Hubei in the north, and Badong County in the east. The wetland park saddles at the junction of six counties in three provinces. The elevation of the wetland park is 1,730 meters above the sea level. Surrounded by mountains, it is a unique basin in the mountains, for unique natural landscapes of the basin and mountains with natural forest resources and wetland plants resources. It is the only inland sub-tropical forest ecosystem in the mid-latitude region in the northern hemisphere. The Shennongjia Dajiu Lake is a perfect combination of wetland ecosystem and the forest ecosystem. Its unique wetland structures mean that the Dajiu Lake wetlands are more diversified than any other wetlands. Amid the park’s unique and diversified environment, precious and rare animals such as golden-haired monkey, white crane and golden eagles live and multiply in the reserve. And also due to unique natural environment, relict plants such as Davidia involucrata Baill, Liriodendron chinense and Cercidiphyllum japonicum could have survived the destructive ice ages and can still live and regenerate in this reserve.

The Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve, located in northern Jiangxi province on the south bank of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, covers an area of 22,400 hectares. The reserve is in the northwestern part of Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. From October to March each year, vast areas of marsh and smaller water areas appear when the water level of the lake recedes. During this period, grasses are lush and wild flowers are blossoming, and the rich aquatic resources are the attraction to rare and precious migratory birds from the Siberia of Russia, Mongolia and China’s northeast to spend the winter. Each year, when numerous birds migrate to the vast water area and wetlands for the winter, they produce spectacular scenes such as the swan lake and the great walls of white cranes. Then this place becomes a paradise and attraction to global ecologists and big number of tourists.

The Jilin Xianghai National Nature Reserve, founded in 1981 with approval by Jilin provincial government, is a reserve featuring the inland wetland and water ecosystem for the protection of precious waterfowl such as red-crowned crane and precious plants such as Ulmus macrocarpa var. mongolica. The nature reserve, located in Tongyu County in Jilin province, covers an area of 105,467 hectares. The nature reserve, 45 kilometers from the south to the north and 42 kilometers from the east to the west, borders the Horqin Right Wing Middle Banner of Inner Mongolia in the west and Taonan City in the north. The Huolin River runs in the east-west direction in the southern part of the reserve, and in the central part of the reserve, there is the Emutai River, and the Taoer River in the north. The nature reserve expands to cover four towns and townships and 32 villages, with more than 20,000 people making a living on agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry and fisheries.

The Chongming Dongtan National Birds Nature Reserve is a national-level wetland-type nature reserve for the protection of migratory birds and their habitat. Located at the estuary of the Yangtze River (from 121°50′ to 122°05′ east longitude and from 31°25′ to 31°38′ north latitude)and at the eastern end of the Chongming Island, the third largest island in China, the nature reserve consists of four parts – the Tuanjie marsh area, the Dongwang marsh area, the Beibaxiao marsh area and the water area 3,000 meters from the Wusong benchmark. Total area of the reserve is 241.55 square kilometers, accounting for 7.8% of total wetlands in Shanghai. The reserves comprises of 165.92 square kilometers of the core zone, 10.7 square kilometers of the buffer zone and 64.93 square kilometers of the experimental zone.
